홍박사들, 시대의 불안을 그리다
홍익대학교 박사 과정에 재학 중인 14인의 미술가들이 주목한 동시대의 초상도바로이런 것이었다. 시대를 읽는 미술가로 거듭나기 위해 창작과 이론을 병행하는 이들은 패러디물인 "홍박사님을 아세요?"를 재차 패러디하여 스스로 우스광스러운 홍박사가 되었다. 전시의 딱딱한 진입장벽을 허물고 유쾌한 분위기 속에서 관객에게 다가간다는 기획의 의도가 돋보인다. 무언가에 대항하거나 많은 이들의 공감을 끌어내는 방법으로 유머만큼 좋은 게 없지 않던가. 물론, 전시의 목표가 순수미술의 대중 친화적 제스처 에 그치는 건 아니다. (...) 하나의 예술작품은 예술과 예술가를 매서운 자기 반성의 장으로 이끄는 '예술 자체의 비평'이기도 하다. 초월을 노래하면서 지독한 현실성을 살고, 무소유를 외치면서 '풀소유'를 동경하는 거짓된 예술가들이 넘쳐나는 시대이다. 품격 있는 철학은 익히지 않으면서 대중에게는 형이상학자로 인정받길 원하고, 창의적 삶을 위한 통찰보다는 SNS 유명인이 되는 데에 더 혈안인 예술가들도 어렵지 않게 만날 수 있다. 모두가 그런 건 아니지만, 순수미술가가 '난폭한 평범함'을 마치 미술시장에서의 경쟁력으로 떠받드는 경우는 허다하다. 그래서일까, 노래 "홍박사님 을 아세요?"가 표방하는 진지함에 대한 무감각이 오히려 정서적으로 맑고 투명해 보일 때도 있다. 인스턴트식 도취와 자본주의적 속물근성은 뻔뻔하기 그지없지만, 적어도 속은 느낌은 아니니 말이다.
이러한 난감한 현실 속에서 14인의 개성 넘치는 홍박사들은 예술과 삶에서 위선을 걷어내고자 한다. 가벼운 쇼츠의 난립 속에서 무거운 시대정신을 직감하려 하고, 대중의 취향 속에서 동시대의 휴머니즘을 읽어내려 한다. 전시장을 찾은 관객들은 때로는 익살을 부리고, 때로는 근엄한 작품들을 감상하며 삶의 가장 깊은 긴장과 불안을 만나게 될 것이다. 물론, 이 특별한 만남은 우리 삶에 대한 비난이나 냉소가 아니다. 언제나 그래왔듯이, 참 된 예술작품은 희극을 통해 슬픔의 저변을 일깨우고, 비극을 통해 실패와 고통에 공감하기 때문이다.
