서울시립미술관(관장 최은주)과 아이테르(대표 공명성)는 2025년 9월 6일(토) 오후 2시부터 6시까지 서울시립미술관 나눔동 2층 다목적홀에서 《페이퍼 타운: 말할 수 없는 것들을 위한 마을》 전시와 연계한 세미나를 공동 개최했다. 이번 세미나는 지도 제작 과정에서 삽입되는 가상의 지명 ‘페이퍼 타운(Paper Town)’ 개념을 출발점으로, 존재하지만 기록되지 못한 기억과 장소, 이름 붙여지지 않은 이야기들을 예술적·비평적으로 탐구하는 자리였다.
《페이퍼 타운》 전시는 김도연, 박정호, 이민영, 이성민, 조용연 등 다섯 명의 작가가 참여해, 지워진 지도와 잊힌 기억, 말할 수 없던 개인과 사회의 서사를 회화·설치·드로잉 등 다양한 매체로 풀어내는 기획이다. 전시와 연계한 이번 세미나는 ‘보이지 않지만 있어야 하는 것’, ‘말해지지 않은 것의 존재’, ‘비가시적 장소와 기억’을 주제로 발제와 토론이 이어졌으며, 관객들이 새로운 해석과 사유를 공유할 수 있는 학술적 장을 마련했다.
공명성 아이테르 대표는 “페이퍼 타운은 지도 속 허구의 마을이지만, 실제로는 지워지고 말해지지 못한 이들의 기억을 되살려내는 은유”라며, “이번 세미나를 통해 예술이 사회적 침묵을 드러내고 새로운 공동체적 서사를 만드는 힘을 확인할 수 있었다”고 밝혔다.
또한 그는 “아이테르는 한국을 대표하는 공간인 서울시립미술관과 국립현대미술관을 번갈아 가며, 작가들의 인사이트를 공유하는 세미나를 내년 말까지 매월 정기적으로 개최할 예정”이라고 전했다. 이처럼 아이테르 범일가옥 등 아이테르의 기획전에 참여하는 작가들은, 한국의 대표성이 있는 공공기관에서 연계 세미나를 진행할 수 있는 기회를 추가적으로 얻게 되며, 전시 참여를 넘어 학술적 담론의 장으로 활동 영역을 넓히게 된다.
이번 프로그램은 전시 감상을 넘어 담론적 확장과 비평적 참여를 가능케 하며, 서울시립미술관과 아이테르가 함께 시민들에게 예술적 사유의 장을 제공했다는 점에서 의미가 크다.
