아르눌프 라이너의 회화는 무엇을 그렸는가보다, 어떻게 그리기를 멈추지 않았는가에 의해 규정된다. 그의 Übermalungen, 즉 ‘덧칠하기’는 이미지의 추가가 아니라 이미지에 대한 지속적인 불복종이다. 화면은 완성의 순간에 도달하지 못한 채 반복적으로 침범되고, 회화는 결과물이 아니라 행위의 축적으로 남는다. 이 태도는 전후 유럽 회화가 감당해야 했던 윤리적 부담과 깊이 맞닿아 있다.
라이너의 덧칠은 파괴로 오해되기 쉽다. 이미 존재하는 이미지 위에 검은 색면과 격렬한 붓질을 얹는 행위는 기존 의미를 지워버리는 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 그의 작업은 무효화가 아니라 봉인에 가깝다. 이미지는 사라지지 않고, 접근 불가능한 층위로 밀려난다. 이는 전후 트라우마를 재현하지 않으면서도 회피하지 않는 전략이다. 말할 수 없는 것을 말하지 않는 방식으로 남겨두는 것, 라이너의 회화는 그 불편한 균형 위에 서 있다.
그가 자신의 얼굴과 신체를 덧칠의 대상으로 삼았다는 점은 중요하다. ‘페이스 파스’와 ‘바디 포즈’ 연작에서 얼굴은 인식의 단서가 아니라 공격의 표면이 된다. 이는 자아 탐구의 제스처라기보다, 주체가 더 이상 안정된 중심이 될 수 없다는 선언처럼 읽힌다. 신체는 표현의 도구가 아니라, 전후 유럽이 짊어진 불안의 매개체다. 회화는 이 불안을 설명하지 않고, 물질적으로 체현한다.
라이너는 빈 행동주의의 일원이 아니었으나, 그들의 급진적 신체 사용에 앞선 회화적 조건을 마련했다. 그는 캔버스 안에서 이미 회화가 신체적 사건이 될 수 있음을 증명했다. 피와 실제 행위 이전에, 붓질은 충분히 폭력적일 수 있었고, 충분히 명상적일 수 있었다. 이 양가성은 그의 작업을 특정 사조로 환원하기 어렵게 만든다.
제도적 성공은 그의 실험을 무디게 만들지 않았다. 도큐멘타 참여, 베니스 비엔날레 국가관 대표, 유럽 주요 미술관의 지속적인 초대는 그를 전후 추상의 중심으로 고정시켰다. 그럼에도 라이너의 회화는 정전(canon)의 안정성에 안주하지 않는다. 반복되는 덧칠은 하나의 스타일이 아니라, 스스로를 끊임없이 무효화하는 태도에 가깝다.
라이너의 작업에서 제스처는 감정의 분출이 아니다. 그것은 기억을 다루는 윤리적 선택이다. 덧칠된 화면은 질문을 던진다. 우리는 과거를 얼마나 투명하게 드러낼 수 있는가, 그리고 무엇을 끝내 덮어둘 수밖에 없는가. 라이너는 그 답을 말하지 않는다. 대신 회화가 그 질문을 견딜 수 있는 장소임을 끝까지 증명했다.
