로버트 무친은 금융과 미술이라는 서로 다른 제도권에서 장기간 활동한 인물이다. 그는 1960~80년대 골드만삭스에서 블록 트레이딩을 담당하며 기관 주식 거래 구조의 형성에 관여했고, 1990년 은퇴 이후 뉴욕에서 상업 갤러리를 운영하며 전후 미국 미술의 주요 작가들을 다뤘다. 두 시기의 활동은 판단, 중개, 신뢰를 중심으로 한 업무 방식이 다른 영역에서 지속된 경로로 정리할 수 있다.
금융권에서 무친이 수행한 역할은 대규모 거래의 성사를 위한 조율과 결정이었다. 그는 매수자와 매도자의 조건을 파악하고, 적절한 시점과 가격을 선택하는 데 능숙한 인물로 평가받았다. 이러한 역량은 갤러리 운영에서도 동일하게 작동했다. 그가 참여하거나 설립한 C&M Arts, L&M Arts, Mnuchin Gallery는 전후 미국 미술의 핵심 작가들을 중심으로 전시를 구성했으며, 작품의 상태, 출처, 역사적 위치를 명확히 제시하는 데 초점을 두었다.
갤러리 프로그램은 신진 작가 발굴이나 실험적 기획보다는, 이미 미술사적 합의가 형성된 작가군을 안정적으로 다루는 방향으로 유지되었다. 잭슨 폴록, 마크 로스코, 빌럼 드 쿠닝, 알렉산더 칼더, 도널드 저드, 프랭크 스텔라 등은 반복적으로 소개되었고, 특히 드 쿠닝의 경우 여러 차례 개인전이 열렸다. 이는 작가의 작업 변화를 연대기적으로 정리하고, 주요 시기를 확인하는 성격의 전시였다.
무친은 전시에 대해 강한 애정을 보였지만, 전시를 새로운 해석의 장으로 확장하기보다는 박물관급 작품을 상업 공간에서 정제된 형태로 제시하는 방식을 유지했다. 이로 인해 그의 갤러리는 연구 기관이나 실험 공간보다는, 제도와 시장 사이에서 신뢰를 매개하는 장소로 기능했다.
경매장에서의 활동 역시 그의 위치를 보여준다. 그는 주요 이브닝 세일에서 지속적으로 모습을 드러냈고, 필요한 순간에 명확한 가격을 제시하는 방식으로 알려졌다. 2019년 제프 쿤스의 Rabbit 낙찰은 개인적 취향의 표현이 아니라, 시장에서 특정 작가의 가격대와 위상을 확정하는 사건으로 기록되었다. 이 과정에서 무친은 해석자나 비평가가 아니라, 거래를 성사시키는 대리인으로 역할을 수행했다.
수집에 대한 그의 태도는 일관됐다. 그는 작품을 창고에 보관하지 않고 생활 공간에 두었으며, 수집의 이유를 애정과 동반의 개념으로 설명했다. 다만 그의 수집과 거래가 고가의 블루칩 작가에 집중되어 있었다는 점에서, 이는 개인적 신념과 시장 구조가 결합된 결과로 이해된다.
동료들은 그를 절제되고 신뢰할 수 있는 인물로 평가했다. 이러한 평가는 그의 개인적 태도를 설명하지만, 동시에 그가 활동한 구조가 오랜 기간 유지될 수 있었던 조건을 보여준다. 로버트 무친은 새로운 미술 흐름을 제시한 인물이라기보다, 전후 미국 미술 시장의 한 작동 방식을 대표적으로 보여주는 사례다.
