전시장에서 가장 많이 보이지만 가장 적게 이야기되는 구조물이 있다. 관람자는 작품 앞에 서 있다고 느끼지만, 실제로 그 시선은 늘 가벽에 의해 조정된다. 가벽은 작품을 받쳐주는 배경이 아니라, 전시가 성립되는 조건 자체에 가깝다. 벽이 없으면 작품은 떠 있고, 공간은 방향을 잃는다. 그럼에도 가벽은 전시 설명에서 빠지기 쉽다. 이 글은 그 생략된 구조를 다시 바라보기 위한 기록이다.
아이테르의 전시용 가벽은 높이 2미터, 폭 1미터의 모듈 구조로 설계되어 있다. 흰색 도장으로 마감된 표면은 특정 작품을 강조하지 않기 위해 의도적으로 중립성을 유지한다. 이 중립성은 미학적 선택이면서 동시에 기능적 판단이다. 색이 없기에 어떤 이미지도 얹힐 수 있고, 형태가 고정되어 있기에 관람자의 시선은 안정적으로 머문다. 가벽의 하부에 더해진 베이스는 조형적 장식이 아니라, 전시가 쓰러지지 않도록 하는 물리적 장치다. 이 무게와 폭은 공간의 안전을 지키는 동시에, 작품 간의 거리를 규정한다.
가벽은 전시의 동선을 만든다. 어디서 멈추고, 어디를 지나가며, 무엇을 먼저 보게 되는지는 대부분 벽의 배치에서 결정된다. 이는 큐레토리얼 판단이 물질화된 형태다. 텍스트로 쓰인 기획 의도는 관람자에게 곧바로 전달되지 않지만, 벽의 각도와 간격은 즉각적으로 신체에 작용한다. 아이테르의 가벽이 단면과 양면 전시 모두를 고려한 구조를 갖는 이유도 여기에 있다. 하나의 면만을 전제로 하지 않는 설계는, 전시가 특정 시점이나 방향에 고정되지 않도록 여지를 남긴다.
이 가벽은 소유되지 않고 이동한다. 렌탈이라는 방식은 전시 구조를 고정 자산이 아니라 순환하는 자원으로 다룬다. 한 번의 전시를 위해 제작되고 폐기되는 벽이 아니라, 여러 장소와 맥락을 통과하며 반복 사용되는 구조물이다. 그 과정에서 가벽에는 흔적이 쌓인다. 미세한 긁힘, 보수된 도장면, 이동 중 생긴 자국들은 지워지지 않고 남는다. 이 흔적들은 실패나 결함이라기보다, 전시가 축적된 기록에 가깝다. 가벽은 말없이 여러 전시의 무게를 견디며 다음 현장으로 이동한다.
아이테르가 가벽 렌탈을 하나의 통합 솔루션으로 제안하는 이유도 이 구조적 인식과 연결되어 있다. 전시 공간 설계, 작품 배치, 디지털 도슨트, 작품 렌탈까지 이어지는 흐름 속에서 가벽은 단순한 장비가 아니라 연결 매개로 기능한다. 벽 위에 걸리는 것은 작품이지만, 그 아래에는 기획과 노동, 예산과 일정, 관람 경험에 대한 판단이 함께 얹힌다. 가벽을 분리된 서비스로 두지 않고 전시 전체의 맥락 안에서 다루는 태도는, 전시를 결과보다 과정으로 인식하려는 시도에 가깝다.
이 글이 가벽을 미술비평 목록에 두는 이유도 여기에 있다. 전시는 완성된 이미지로 소비되기 쉽지만, 그 이미지를 가능하게 한 조건은 쉽게 사라진다. 아이테르는 가벽을 통해 그 조건을 다시 드러낸다. 작품이 걸리기 전의 벽, 관람자가 떠난 뒤 남아 있는 구조, 철거를 기다리는 전시의 뼈대까지를 함께 기록하려는 태도다. 전시는 작품만으로 이루어지지 않는다. 가벽은 그 사실을 가장 조용하게, 그러나 분명하게 증명하는 구조물이다.
가벽을 바라보는 시선이 달라질 때, 전시를 읽는 방식도 함께 바뀐다. 아이테르의 가벽은 보이지 않는 것을 감추기보다, 전시가 어떻게 만들어지는지를 드러내는 방향을 선택한다. 이 벽 위에 또 다른 전시가 걸릴 것이다. 그리고 그 아래에는, 다시 한 번 말해지지 않은 조건들이 조용히 쌓일 것이다.
