나는 꽤 오래 전부터 여러 경로를 통해 수집한 식물들을 작업실에 모으고 있다. 최근에 수집해서 싱싱한 식물도 있지만, 대부분의 것들은 바싹 마른 꽃이거나 짓무르거나 곰팡이가 피어 그 형체를 알아보기 힘든 꽃들이다. 다양한 종류의 식물들이 시간의 흐름에 따라 점차적으로 색이 변하고, 질감이 변하고, 저마다의 냄새를 풍기며, 마치 찌꺼기나 재와 같이 되어버린 현상들을 감각적으로 경험하면서 작업이 출발한다.
지난 10여 년간 이러한 식물들에서 파생된 풍경들을 그려왔다. 그 풍경 안에는 삶에서 죽음에 이르는 과정들이 혼재 되어있는 동시에, 현실에서 존재하는 풍경과는 또 다른 세계가 회화적 이미지로서 덧입혀져 있다. 나의 기억과 감정이 담긴 대상들이 함께 뒤섞여 부패하며 이름 모를 것들이 되어가는 과정에 주목하고, 그것들이 집적되어 한데 널브러진 모호한 형상을 화면 가득 풀어낸다. 그리고 이를 하나의 화면에 담기도 하고, 여러 장면으로 나누어 그리기도 하고, 연결되게 그리기도 한다. 죽음 혹은 소멸이라는 상태는 그것의 전제인 삶의 다양한 순간들과 분리되어 있는 것이 아니고 서로 연결되어 있기 때문이다. 이는 제한된 시간과 공간 안에 한정되어 늘 살아가는 동시에 죽음과 소멸로 향하고 있는 유약한 인간의 삶의 모습에서 기인한다.
나는 종종 인간이란 존재가 너무나 연약하고 불온한 존재라는 생각을 한다. 알 수 없는 질병에 걸리거나 천재지변을 겪거나 전염병으로 덧없이 죽게 되는 모습을 볼 때 더욱 그렇게 느낀다. 아무리 현대의 과학 기술이 발전하더라도, 인간의 노화를 막을 수 없고 죽는 것을 막을 수가 없다. 일상 속에서 그러한 인간의 유약한 모습을 마주할 때마다, 어쩌면 그 삶이 만지기만 해도 부서질 것 같은 시든 꽃이나 마른 이파리의 삶과 비슷하다는 생각이 든다. 미술 작품 뿐만 아니라 시나 문학 작품 속에서도 인간의 생애주기를 빗댈 때 식물의 생애주기를 자주 언급하는데, 그 이유는 인간이 태어나서 성장하고 죽는 과정을 식물에서 새싹이 나고, 꽃이 피고, 열매를 맺고, 시들고, 떨어지는 일련의 과정들로 가장 잘 축약해서 보여주기 때문일 것이다. 나는 이러한 인간과 식물의 은유적 관계 및 현상들을 바탕으로, 그 ‘끝’에 대한 질문과 생사의 과정 속 풍경을 그리고자 한다.
한편, 여러 회화적 과정들이 생성되고 소멸하며 결과물로 나오는 회화는 내게 가장 불온하면서도 천착할 수밖에 없는 매체로 느껴진다. 화면 안에서 이루어지는 몸짓들이 축적되어 계속적으로 변화하는 회화 작업은 늘 희열과 절망을 번갈아 안겨주며, 어디가 끝인지 알 수 없는 결과물들을 만들어 내기 때문이다. 나는 대상을 사실적으로 재현하기보다는, ‘그리기’에 몰입하여 회화적 이미지로 담아내고자 한다. 그에 따라, 점과 선으로 이루어 내는 이름 모를 풀과 꽃들의 형상 위에 물감이 번지고 흘러내리는 등의 여러 회화적 과정들이 이루어지고, 식물을 그리기 위해 주로 사용하는 가는 붓의 반복적인 터치는 화면 안에서 행해지는 수많은 몸짓을 재현한다. 마치 미약한 존재들을 건드리듯이 가늘고 여린 세필로 터치를 쌓아 나가고, 쌓아 놓은 선들을 닦아내거나 긁어내며 그 위에 또 터치들을 새긴다. 나는 끊임없이 반복되는 이러한 몸짓들을 통해 '그린다는 것'에 더욱 집착하게 된다.
