'무르익어가는 나이테'는 가죽이라는 매개를 통해 무르익어가는 시간과 나이 들어감을 은유적으로 표현한다. 베지터블 가죽을 한 겹 한 겹 정성스럽게 말아 붙이는 방식은, 해마다 겹겹이 쌓이는 나무의 나이테를 떠올리게 한다.
시간이 흐를수록 점차 짙어지는 가죽의 표면은 조용하지만 분명한 생의 흔적을 담아낸다. 형태와 질감이 천천히 드러나는 이 과정을 통해, 삶의 흐름이 가진 아름다움과 필연성을 담담히 되새긴다.
제작 과정에서 발생하는 스플릿 가죽—보통은 버려지는 이 가죽을—수거하고 재사용함으로써, 외면받는 소재에 새로운 가치를 부여한다. 가죽을 말고 쌓아 올리는 방식은 소재의 물리적 강도를 높이는 동시에, 시간의 층위를 견고하게 쌓아 올린다. 가죽의 결이 ‘시간의 결’이 되어가는 이 작품은, 우리가 지나온 시간과 그 안에 스며든 경험들을 시각적으로 구현해낸다.
작품은 ‘늙어감’을 쇠퇴가 아닌 생의 자연스러운 리듬으로 바라본다. 우리가 쌓아온 층들, 간직한 흔적들, 그리고 서서히 무르익어가는 조용한 순간들이 결국 우리가 되어가는 과정임을 보여준다.
This work metaphorically captures the process of ripening and aging through vegetable-tanned leather, layered and coiled with deliberate care. The leather’s surface gradually deepens in tone over time, much like the tree rings that mark the years of growth. Through this quiet unfolding of form and texture, the piece gently reflects the beauty and inevitability of life’s passage. By collecting and reusing split leather—typically discarded in the crafting process—the work gives new value to what is often overlooked. The method of winding and stacking leather pieces not only reinforces the material's strength but also builds a solid shape that holds the weight of accumulated time. In this piece, the grain of leather becomes a metaphor for the grain of time. It invites viewers to contemplate the rhythm of aging, not as decline, but as a natural and essential part of life’s cycle. It is a meditation on the layers we build, the traces we carry, and the quiet, ripening moments that define who we are becoming.
