나의 작업은 양가적인 감정을 포착하는 것에서 시작된다. 양가적인 감정은 고통을 수반한다. 나는 고통이 무엇인지 보다 이것이 우리에게 무엇을 할 수 있는지 질문하고자 한다. 작품 <따뜻한 상실>은 타인과의 관계에서 상실할 수 밖에 없는 나의 일부, 동시에 타인의 일부를 흡수할 수 밖에 없는, 강렬하지만 언어로 설명될 수 없는 접촉에 대한 작업이다. 2개의 에디션만이 존재하는 판화 작품이다.
섬뜩하면서 불안하고, 동시에 돌봄과 따뜻함이 느껴지는 순간은 우리의 의식을 거슬러 내면화된 기억, 무감각해진 본능과 마주하게 한다. 그 과정 속에서 고통의 고유성이 가진 비언어적 힘을 발견하곤 한다. 그 힘은 카테고리를 부수는 힘이다. 우리는 고유한 채로 연결될 수 있다. 다만 의식이 쉽게 망각하게 만들 뿐이다. 나는 개인적인 역사, 사회적 복잡성, 물리적 조건들이 얽히고 섥힌 순간 속에서 새어나오는 사소함들을 상상의 계기로 삼는다. 자전적인 오브제(살림살이), 타인과의 내밀한 이벤트, 또는 장소에 반응하는 설치를 통해 관객들이, 또는 관객들과 설명할 수 없는 힘을 함께 경험하길 원한다.
My work begins with the act of capturing ambivalent emotions. Ambivalence inevitably carries pain. Rather than asking what pain is, I am more interested in what it does to us.
The work Warm Loss addresses a kind of contact that is intense yet unspeakable—a state in which a part of myself is inevitably lost in relation to another, while simultaneously absorbing something of the other in return. It is a print edition consisting of only two copies.
Moments that feel eerie and unsettling, yet also carry care and warmth, disturb our conscious mind and bring us face-to-face with internalized memories and numbed instincts. Through such moments, I often discover the nonverbal force inherent in pain—a force that resists categorization. It is a force that breaks fixed meanings. We can be connected in our distinctiveness, though consciousness tends to obscure that fact with forgetfulness.
I draw on small, often unnoticed moments that leak through the intersections of personal history, social complexity, and physical condition. Through autobiographical objects (such as household items), intimate events with others, or site-responsive installations, I hope to create situations in which the audience—and with them, an unexplainable force—can be experienced together.
